The Rise of Online Fashion Icons

The digital age has revolutionized the fashion industry, giving rise to a new breed of fashion icons who influence millions of followers through social media. Daria Tal a marketing and fashion expert, shares her insights on what inspires her and the main challenges she faces.

-   What sparked your interest in the fashion world?

"Instagram and Pinterest are my biggest sources of fashion inspiration and I look up to the creators I follow on these platforms who've really made a name for themselves. For some reason, there's always been a little voice in my head, telling me that I could never achieve what they have. Last year I ended up in a burnout and stopped working at my 9-5 job. As I was recovering, I had time on my hands and decided to ignore that little voice. I'm still growing, but I'm already so proud of myself for doing this. Successful or not, it's my passion."

-   Have you ever been criticized for your fashion choices? How did you deal with it? What advice do you have for others facing the same?

"Back in high school, I was very experimental with my fashion choices and I had many phases. Some classmates and other students try to bully me because of it.

Of course, I didn't like it and it made my time in high school challenging.

I'm still glad that I experimented, though, because I believe that trying out a lot of different shapes, colors, textures and overall styles, is the best way to really get to know yourself and find your personal style.

As a teenager, you easily get bullied when you stand out. As you get older, you realize that self-expression is important and bullying mostly stems from jealousy.

The only person that criticising my fashion choices is my mom 😂 She prefers a more moderate style so sometimes my clothes seem a bit too bold for her."

-   What would you say to people who are afraid to try new styles or wear what they love because of what others might think?

"Dress for people who love you, not people who hate you.

People will always have an opinion and something negative to say. You might as well wear the clothes you truly like. It might be uncomfortable at first, but you'll feel so much better and more confident. People who are supportive of your personal style (journey), are the people you need in your life!

You serve no one by playing small. The world is not benefiting from you not sharing your gifts."

-   What do you think about brands like Montzani, which aim to make everyone feel included and respected no matter what they wear?

"I think this is incredibly important. In this day and age, "diversity washing" is done by so many big companies and it's hard to keep track of the true ethics and integrity of all these companies and brands. Finding a fashion brand that is genuine in their inclusion, is very valuable.

I think that any form of creativity is very brave."

-   How does it feel to inspire young people who want to dress uniquely and become fashion enthusiasts like you?

"I'm still small on Instagram, so I don't know if I am, but that sounds like a dream!

I hope to be a source of creative influence to others."
